Celebration overload!

We had our family meet and greet/knama-khosk/khosk-kap on Saturday, December 26 in the Kazarian residence in Belmont. The DerHartunian family– Argam’s parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, and cousins– traveled to the Bay Area from Los Angeles for the special event. Argam’s and my parents had met on several occasions, but this was the first time our extended families were meeting.

My family, comprising of 15 people, gathered at my house around 6:30PM and the DerHartunian family, comprising of about 30 people, arrived in full force at 7:30PM, carrying gorgeous flower arrangements, chocolate, and cognac. Everyone greeted each other at the door with smiles, hugs, and kisses, and we invited them to appetizers and drinks in our tented balcony. The DerHartunian family, however, insisted that the festivities could not begin until they had officially asked for my family’s permission for Argam and I to be married.

Argam’s dad gave a beautiful speech to start, then asked my grandmother, the oldest member of my family, for her permission. After she agreed and gave her blessing, he asked my parents, and they both agreed and gave their blessing. Finally, he asked the rest of my family, and they all agreed as well. After the wonderful news, the party was ready to get started!

The rest of the night included amazing cuisine, speeches and toasts given by members of each family as well as Argam and myself, and lots of dancing. Argam also officially put the engagement ring on my finger after a very heartfelt speech. It is also tradition that I receive a gift from members of Argam’s family, all of which were breathtakingly beautiful.

We were both extremely happy and extremely overwhelmed by the love, happiness, and support we received from our families that night, and could not be more blessed and grateful. As my speech said, it was our hope that our families would unite as one, and that was exactly what they did!
